No matter which industry your MSP serves, data is at the heart of your customers’ business. And, that data is growing at an exponential rate. The IDC estimates that by 2025, 175 zettabytes of data will be created each year. To give you an idea of how large a zettabyte is, it is equal to:

– one thousand exabytes  (the data held by Google is estimated to be around 15EB)

– one million petabytes (1PB is equal to 500 billion pages of standard typed text)

– one billion terabytes (1TB could hold 310,000 photos)

– one trillion gigabytes (1GB is equal to the bed of a pickup truck filled with paper)

As your customers’ data continues to grow, they will be counting on you to protect it from cybercriminals, natural disasters, hardware failures, and accidental deletion. To understand how companies are protecting their business-critical data, Barracuda recently surveyed more than 1,000 IT professionals. The most surprising discovery was that 57 percent of IT administrators are managing backups from more than one site — with some managing twenty-six or more. This finding combined with the push for multi-cloud deployments, illustrates that the days of managing a single site and on-premise architecture is a coming to an end.

Based on this, what should you look for in a backup and recovery solution to best protect today’s SMBs?

Choosing the right backup and recovery solution

In the past, businesses just needed to protect the data they have on site. Today, however, it is more complicated – they need to protect data that is on premises, virtual, and in the cloud. Here are a few things to look for in a backup solution:

Ability to back up data regardless of the source. The survey discovered that businesses are backing up more types of data than ever before, which includes databases, email, application data, multimedia, SaaS data, and more. To make sure that your customers have all the data they need in the case of a disaster, it is important to look for a solution that can backup the information regardless of where the data lives — which means you should look for a solution that can backup data from the cloud and on-premises.

Meets strict RTOs (recovery time objectives) and RPOs (recovery point objectives). The Barracuda study also found that more data is being deemed mission critical by today’s modern businesses. While this can vary from business to business on how much data they can lose since their last backup, this finding emphasizes the fact that your customers will be expecting you to find a robust solution that fits their needs. Look for a solution that can backup data frequently to meet your customers’ requirements but also uses deduplication techniques to store their data without heavily increasing their overhead.

– Scales with your customers’ environment. Deploy solutions that can support environments as they grow. Growth might mean adding more devices to their networks, additional applications, email services, SaaS applications, and more. In the survey, it was found that 38 percent of respondents do not use Office 365, but 6 percent of those respondents are planning on using it in the next year. Find a disaster recovery solution that can fit in a variety of environments and accounts for the changes that will happen as your customer’s business evolves.
