Ask an MSP Expert

In this edition of Ask an MSP Expert, we delve into the power of public speaking. Whether you’re addressing a conference, leading a sales presentation, or simply conversing in a team meeting, mastering the art of public speaking can profoundly enhance your confidence and ability to seize opportunities.

In a recent webinar, AppMeetup’s President, Danny Suk Brown, and the Director of Strategic Partnerships, David Suk Brown, shared some amazing tips to elevate your public speaking skills. Let’s explore the key elements to help you become a more compelling and impactful communicator.

Q: How can words amplify your influence?

Words carry immense weight in public speaking. It’s not just about what you say but also how you articulate your message. Your words should paint a vivid picture and evoke emotions of your audience. By crafting compelling narratives and using language that resonates with your listeners, you can effectively convey your ideas and inspire action. Remember, the right words have the power to captivate and persuade your audience, ultimately increasing your influence.

Q: Why is tone crucial?

Your tone sets the mood and communicates your attitude towards the topic at hand. Whether you’re delivering a sales pitch or leading a team meeting, your tone should be confident, engaging, and authentic. It’s essential to modulate your voice to match the message you’re conveying, to effectively exude enthusiasm, empathy, or authority as needed. A well-calibrated tone enhances your credibility and fosters connection with your audience, driving engagement and receptiveness to your ideas.

Q: What are some important tips to keep in mind when speaking publicly?

  • Body language: Body language speaks volumes in public speaking, often conveying more than words alone. Your facial expressions, gestures, and posture should align with your message, reinforcing its clarity and sincerity. Avoid closed-off gestures like crossed arms, which signal defensiveness or disinterest. Instead, maintain open body language to invite connection and rapport with your audience. Whether you’re addressing a small group or a large audience, your body language should exude confidence and approachability, inviting listeners to lean in and engage with your message.
  • Mindset matters: One of the greatest obstacles to effective public speaking is self-doubt. Recognize that your audience is rooting for your success and focus on delivering value through your words, tone, and body language. Cultivate a positive mindset that affirms your abilities and strengths as a communicator. Remember, every speaking opportunity is a chance to learn and grow.
  • Active listening: Effective communication is a two-way street, which requires active listening just as much as speaking. Lean in and empathize with your audience to understand their perspectives and concerns. By actively listening, you can ask better questions and tailor your message to address their needs.

Q: How can I improve my public speaking skills?

Public speaking is a skill that improves with practice. Dedicate time to refine your delivery, focusing on the power of your voice, body language, and word choice. Seek opportunities to speak in various settings, from local community events to industry conferences, honing your ability to connect with diverse audiences.

Continuously invest in your personal and professional development as a speaker. It is important to seek feedback, attend workshops, and study the techniques of master communicators.

Are you and your team ready to improve your public speaking skills?

Mastering the art of public speaking is a journey of self-discovery and growth. By harnessing the power of words, tone, and body language, you can captivate audiences, inspire action, and unlock new opportunities. Great article. Luckily for my IT degree, I had to take a public speaking class. Doing so helped me better prepare for meetings, sales pitches, presentations, etc in the workforce. Was a big fear of mine, but not so much anymore.

  2. Rule one: don’t become a slave of your digital presentation tools. Use it for your benefit, but don’t adhere to it too strictly; interact with your audience!
